That game was the final of three games that opened the Kaua‘i Youth Basketball Association 14 and Under summer league.
Earlier in the evening, Kristle Henry finished with 19 points and Mahea Hanie Grace added 15 points to lead the Kamikaze to a 43-15 margin over Waimea. Bristy-Ann Agu and Vakeesha Lagazo netted seven and six points, respectively, for Waimea.
Wheeler Batol finished with 17 points and Taylor Fernandez had 16 to lead the G-Unit A to a 43-28 win over Team Central. Matthew and Kaimana Cummings combined to finished with 15 and eight points, respectively, to lead Central.
That win gave coaches Cecil Gee and William Aki a perfect sweep of the night with both G-Unit squads.
Steven McCabe aided Harrison’s scoring with eight points for G-Unit B.
Trey Aguano and Kerwin Morano paced the yellowshirts with eight and five points, respectively.
Coach Philip Baclayon and Mike Stevens had some of the Hanakila players watching the action at Kalaheo in anticipation of taking the floor, Monday night.
“He wanted to see how the new floor looked since his boys haven’t seen it since it was installed,” said Karen Matsumoto, KYBA coordinator.
The KYBA 14 and Under league takes a break as KYBA hosts hosts its 6th Annual 14 Under Invitational featuring three off-island teams.
Action for that tournament got underway Friday evening at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center and will wrap up with the championships Sunday morning.
The visiting teams include Hawaiian Hearts from Molokai with coach Melanie “Leo” Wainui, Kalama Basketball from Kalama Hills, Maui, under coaches Donald and Danielle Shepherd, and the Kula Stars from Kula, Maui, under coaches Nathan and Jonathan Furtado.
“I spoke with one of the Maui teams, and the girls are very excited about coming here to play,” Matsumoto said.
The Kaua‘i teams playing in the invitational tournament include Gee’s Angels, the Kamikaze, Kaulupono-Blue, Kaulupono-White and the Kilauea Hui.
