KOLOA — A small metal storage shed in Koloa was damaged by fire Thursday after children were playing with matches next to the shed, according to a county press release.
No one was injured by the fire. Damage to the shed and its contents is estimated to be about $500.
An investigation was conducted and it was determined that the fire was caused by children playing with matches next to the shed.
Police Dispatch received a call about the fire at around 3:55 p.m. When firefighters from the Koloa station arrived, the fire was almost extinguished by neighbors using garden hoses.
Fire officials are asking residents to be extra vigilant as the dry season approaches.
Prevention tips offered by the Kaua‘i Fire Department include:
• Create a fire-safe space not less than 30 feet around your home.
• Don’t burn compost and other combustibles under windy conditions.
• Extinguish cigarettes completely before disposing them.
• Never leave a fire unattended.
• Don’t leave matches around for children to play with.
