The 15th birthday celebration of the Kaua‘i Soccer Club combined with the nice weather was more than enough reason for a day of soccer in Anahola.
Coach Gwen Tamura, head of the KSC-Na Anela that earned the championship berth of the Girls Under 18 division at the Kaua‘i Soccer Association spring league, said the tournament also celebrated the conclusion of a successful KSA season.
Players from the different KSC teams were mixed into teams with the goal of having their names placed on the perpetual trophy.
Chauncie Garcia, captain of the Yellow Sea Dragons, downed the Purple Flying Ninja Monkeys, 2-0 in playoffs with Garcia scoring both goals to advance the team to the finals.
Sierra Mayer, one of the midfielders for the KSC-Na Anela, headed up the Purple Flying Ninja Monkeys that, despite the shutout, displayed exciting ground passing with the ball being played on both sides of the field.
With the win, the Yellow Sea Dragons faced The Monsters, captained by Seri Niimi-Burch, for the final in the 2009 Sassy/Jets Tournament.
Jordan Taboniar opened the books with a pair of first-half goals for a 2-0 halftime lead for the Monsters. Coming off the break, Taboniar and Niimi-Burch demonstrated control of the midfield, sending the ball to Cassie Wilson and Wailana Makepa for goals that sealed the Monsters’ win.
The Yellow Sea Dragons roster include Garcia, Kulia Blalock, Gabby Taboniar, Cassidy Yatsko, Sariah Mokuahi, Zariani Fernandez, Quinn Garner and Deshaynee Iseri-Carvalho.
Mayer was joined by Kaimi Moniz, Kanani Moniz, Alanna Bauman, Chono Fernandez Jr., Ezikio Quntana and Andres Ezuardia to make up the Ninja Monkeys.
Faith Blalock, Haylei Sheldon, and Zoey Kaneakua joined Wilson, Makepa, Jordan Taboniar and Niimi-Burch to make up the Monsters.
