LIHU‘E – For the first time in eight years, fares for The Kaua‘i Bus are going up.
Effective Wednesday, it will cost $2 per mainline trip for adults (up from $1.50), $1 per trip for seniors and youth aged seven to 18 (up from 75 cents), and $20 for a monthly bus pass (up from $15), a county press release said Friday.
Shuttle fares will remain unchanged — 50 cents per trip for adults and 25 cents for seniors and youth.
Also starting July 1, discounted bus passes, along with monthly passes, will be available at The Kaua‘i Bus office located on Ho‘olako Street, across from police headquarters, the release said.
Monthly bus passes can also be purchased at the Lihu‘e Civic Center at the Motor Vehicle Registration window.
For a six-month bus pass, the cost will be $90, and an annual bus pass will be $180.
The increases are the first of a two-step process. On July 1, 2010, monthly passes will jump to $25, six-month passes will reach $120, and annual passes will rise to $240.
The measure was first proposed in February through the Cost Control Commission, and was passed by the County Council earlier this month.
In May, County Transportation Executive Janine Rapozo told The Garden Island that the rate changes would result in a revenue increase of approximately $70,000 for the 2010 fiscal year.
