KAPA‘A — Paige Connelly, Bristy Agu and Vakeesha Lagazo had double header games on Saturday.
Paige, whose sister Molly was one of the 165 Waimea graduates, Friday night, was part of the Waimea GU14 team that held off a strong Gee’s Angels’ final-minute push, 22-20 in the first of three games hosted by the Kaua‘i Youth Basketball Association, at the Bernice Hundley Gym in Kapa‘a.
Paige got a break during Game 2 when James Paik netted a dozen points to lead Hanakila to a 41-35 showing over the Kalepa Hillsiders. Kerwin Morano finished with a game-high 13 points in that effort.
Erin Connelly joined Paige on the floor for Game 3, the first of the KYBA 17 and Under games of the summer season, as Waimea fell 37-30 to the Kapa‘a Titaz who got 10 points from Justine Holt and eight points from Ashlyn Lee, a junior at Kapa‘a High School and a solid guard for the Warrior team.
Erin Connelly topped the scoring for the Waimea 17 and Under team with eight points followed by guard Jayme Jacinto adding six and guard Lagazo adding five points.
In the opening GU14 game, Lagazo joined Agu in adding eight points, including some solid ball handling as she broke out of a pack of three Angel defenders to run down the clock.
Agu finished with nine points in its 22-20 win over the Angels who got seven points from Reggie McCabe.
In addition to those three girls, Cheyanne Duarte, a player from the Kaulupono 14s, finished with three points.
