LIHU‘E — Winners of the Kaua‘i Island Utility Cooperative 2009 youth tour were congratulated and sent off last week with best wishes from Randy Hee, president and CEO of KIUC.
Natasha Abadilla of Waimea High School, Alyssa Clark of Kapa‘a High School, Dustin Julian of Kaua‘i High School and Lacey Kalahiki of Kamehameha Schools-Kapalama campus were announced as this year’s youth tour winners, states a release from KIUC.
The Rural Electric Youth Tour brings more than 1,400 high school students to Washington, D.C., each year since the late 1950s. To date, more than 40,000 students from rural areas and small towns across America have participated in this unique program.
Youth tour students learn more about electric cooperatives, American history and the U.S. government through educational seminars, visits with their respective Congressional representatives in the House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate, and various tours around Washington, D.C.
Winners for this year’s tour were chosen by their high schools and were interviewed by a panel consisting of a KIUC Board member, a KIUC employee and a member of the cooperative.
