WAILUA — Dusty Psaila holds a one-stroke lead following two rounds of the Chica Ishii Golf Tournament, Sunday at the Wailua Golf Course.
The final round will take place Saturday starting at 12:30 p.m. and Psaila finished with an average of 81 following two days of play by members of the Kaua‘i Junior Golf Association.
Reyn Morioka, having a great Hole No. 9, Sunday, dropped from his 76, Saturday, to finish with an 85 for an 82 average, a tie with Sean Mamaclay for second place.
“He greened on his second shot,” said Mark Morioka, Reyn’s dad, as he watched the Junior Golfer negotiate the Wailua No. 9 hole, Sunday. “He looked a little wobbly, the ball hitting the right bunker bank, but rolled down right onto the green in the apron. That was a pretty good shot.”
Mamaclay, a strong golfer for Kapa‘a High School during the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation season as well as a state contender during the school year, also dropped from an 83, Saturday to an 87 for his 82 average.
Taylor Viquelia, Weston Moniz and Dylan Balisacan are in a tie for third place with 84 averages, Moniz, the winner of the 15-18 championship during the Spring Classic, improving on his Saturday’s 86 by a stroke to 85, Sunday.
Darren Valencia is in sole possession of fourth place with an 85 average (83-88) followed by another tie between Justin Tokioka (84-89) and Justin Uegawa for fifth place at 86.
A four-way logjam fills in the sixth overall position as Levi Miyashiro (89-83), Braeden Robley (79-87), Kai Adachi (84-84) and Ken Miyata (88-84) share 87 averages.
“It’s only supposed to get getter,” said Wayne Miyata, Ken’s father, while enjoying the Okinawa Festival following the opening round, Saturday. “You shoot an 88 on the first day, get an 86 and end with an 84.”
But Ken jumped two strokes to finish Sunday’s round with an 84, an improvement of four strokes over his Saturday’s 88.
La‘akea Warren follows with an 89 average and Gabby Saiki, the lead wahine golfer for the Kapa‘a High School girls’ team, taking the lead girls’ slot in the tournament with a 92 average, improving to a 90 following the second round from her opening round 93.
The Chica Ishii Golf Tournament, named after one of four gentlemen that started the Kaua‘i Junior Golf Association, wraps up Saturday at the Wailua Golf Course.
