LIHU‘E — Fueled by the recent success of the first annual Mayor-A-Thon, event organizers are already planning for next year, a county news release states.
Bev Brody, coordinator of the Nutrition and Physical Coalition Get Fit Kaua‘i and chair of the Mayor-A-Thon, said the 2010 Mayor-A-Thon: Island Challenge will be June 26.
“People are still talking about the Mayor-A-Thon and are very excited about next year. We decided to set a date now so everyone can plan ahead,” said Brody, noting that June is typically a very busy month and several people from the mainland who participated in the recent Mayor-A-Thon have expressed interest in returning next year.
Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr. is also looking forward to the second annual Mayor-A-Thon.
“We want to build on the success of this year’s event and expand it to include the Neighbor Islands,” said the mayor in the release. “One of the things we’re looking at is adding an educational component so the event will transition into a more comprehensive approach to promoting healthy habits. As soon as all the details are set, we will let everyone know.”
Approximately 700 people participated in this year’s Mayor-A-Thon. A little more than half walked, while others ran or rode bicycles.
Contest winners include: Ryan Harper for best decorated stroller; Caitlyn Harper, best decorated bike; and Mary Ching, best decorated participant.
Another healthy initiative sponsored by the County and the NPAC Get Fit Kaua‘i Worksite Wellness Task Force was launched on Tuesday.
Called the Mayor’s Walking Workbus, the weekly event offers the public a chance to talk story with the mayor while engaged in a healthy activity.
The walk is scheduled every Tuesday during July and August. It begins at 11:45 a.m. at the Mo‘ikeha Building courtyard, with pick-up points at Bank of Hawai’i, the Lihu‘e Post Office, First Hawaiian Bank, Kaua‘i Toyota, Rice Shopping Center, and Ace Hardware.
Anyone who would like to join the Mayor’s Walking Workbus should wear good walking shoes, use sunscreen and bring water.
For more information or to request an auxiliary aid or additional support to participate in the Mayor’s Walking Workbus, call Bev Brody at 212-4765 at least 10 business days before the event.
