LIHU‘E —Taking in a Willie Kahaiali‘i performance was just part of Stephanie Miyasaki’s job Friday.
Miyasaki is the coordinator of the county’s Summer Enrichment Program, generally known as summer fun.
Original plans for the well-known Hawaiian entertainer called for him to visit with the Koloa Summer Enrichment students, but due to scheduling conflicts, the Maui-born Kahaiali‘i ended up visiting the Lihu‘e students following a morning tour that included stops at the different radio stations.
“There are about 650 students enrolled in the Summer Enrichment Program at nine different sites around the island,” Miyasaki said.
The program started on June 15 and will culminate with the annual Fun Day, July 22 at Lydgate Park.
“This will be the students’ final day and there will be a bunch of water slides and bouncers for the event,” Miyasaki said. “The leaders will have to come back another day for clean up and wrapping up everything on July 23.”
She said one of the new features of this year’s program was the re-installment of the educational component where one, or two teachers were placed at each of the sites.
This year’s curriculum centered on health and wellness with students getting lessons on food, nutrition, being active and making healthy choices.
The county’s Summer Enrichment Program falls under the jurisdiction of the county’s Parks and Recreation Department.
