The Lihu‘e Youth Baseball Mustang All-Stars are in the championship game Sunday, said Dondi Viquelia, the Kaua‘i Protect Our Nation’s Youth commissioner.
Viquelia was not sure of the Lihu‘e Mustang opponents, but said if they should drop their Sunday match in the championship round, they are still in the chase because they play another game Monday.
The Kaua‘i PONY All-Stars defeated Waianae, 9-4 in a Saturday morning match, but fell to KAC in the afternoon game.
No final score was available at press time, but Viquelia said when he last checked, KAC was ahead 9-2.
On the other side of the island, the Kawaihau Community Little League Majors All-Stars dropped to Kailua, 13-4.
That loss brings Kawaihau to a 1-1 standing and will face the Kaneohe Americans in a single Sunday match.
Kailua, which Larry Barton said won last year’s tournament and favored to win this year, came alive in the third inning for four runs, fueled in part by two homeruns, one pushing three runs across the plate and the other a solo shot.
Kawaihau answered in the third with a run of its own, the score coming off a Kailua error.
But the Kawaihau bats, despite hits from Keola Lutz and Grant Mitchell, who finished with an RBI, never limbered up.
One parent, who is with the team at the Keolu Field District 1 tournament, described Kawaihau as having solid pitching, holding the defending champions for two innings before the Kailua bats found the mark.
Mitchell, Matthew Cummings and Mitchell Alves combined in the loss.
The parent said Kawaihau players did well, never giving up until the end, but just could not get their bats going.
Kawaihau also played some solid defense, catching Kailua twice on trick plays.
