Kaua‘i High School graduate Skye Shimabukuro posted her first University of Hawai‘i soccer assist, Sunday.
Shimabukuro, a freshman from Kalaheo, was joined by Ambree Ako in notching assists in a losing effort as the University of Hawai‘i wahine dropped a 6-2 match to No. 2 Stanford at the Ohana Hotels & Resort No Ka ‘Oi series at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
The loss drops the Hawai‘i wahine to 0-1-1 on the season, its tie coming Friday night against No. 25 Brigham Young University, 0-0.
Senior forward Britta Bourne paced the Hawai‘i effort with four shots in that scoreless stalemate, including Hawai‘i’s only shot-on-goal attempt.
Bourne continued the effort, Sunday against the Cardinal, notching a goal along with Rachel Domingo, a Roosevelt High School graduate.
Bourne led the wahine with three shots. Kristina Ehrett and Kanani Taaca both posted four saves with three goals against, states a release from the UH Athletic Department.
Ehrett and Taaca shared time in the goal against BYU Friday, Ehrett posting five saves and Taaca adding two saves.
Kelley O’Hara put the Cardinals on the scoreboard early, recording a breakaway in the fourth minute of the game. Courtney Verloo added a goal in the 38th minute followed by a goal from Teresa Noyola at the 40th minute for the 3-0 halftime read.
Shimabukuro opened the Hawai‘i action early in the second half, sending a low cross to Domingo for the touch into the back of the net in the 53rd minute.
The Cardinals answered with a trio of scores, Christen Press’s pair of goals sandwiching O’Hara’s second goal for the 6-1 Stanford lead.
Bourne put the final goal in the net at the 80th minute, taking a low cross from Ako that set up a low shot for the 6-2 final.
The Rainbow Wahine will host Hawai‘i Pacific, Aug. 30 at 5 p.m. at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
