Not all hotdogs are created equal.
Standing over the refrigerated section at the grocery store trying to decide on a brand for the barbecue, ingredients compete with name brands — Bar-S- Chicken Dogs, Hawaiian, Applegate Farms, Tofurky Kielbasa meatless sausage and even Spam shaped dogs.
At a company picnic earlier this summer, eight hotdogs were blind tested on a group of The Garden Island employees.
Hands down Hebrew National Jumbo Franks and Applegate Farms rated head and shoulders above the rest. On a scale of one to five, with one being the worst and five the best, Hebrew National and Applegate Farms received fours and fives for texture, flavor and juiciness.
Words used to describe Hebrew National were, “savory,” “moist and yummy” and “tastes like a German sausage.” The Applegate Farms organic hotdog received accolades like, “slightly spicy” and “the perfect hotdog.”
At the bottom of the barrel were the Tofurky Kielbasa, a Polish-style meatless sausage, and Millers Colassal Beef Frankfurters. Miller’s received comments like “hammy” and “salty.” Words used to describe the meatless sausage were, “sawdust” and “kicked in sand.”
