O‘AHU — Five Swim Kaua‘i swimmers will be part of the 550 swimmers that will compete at the zone swimming meet, Sunday on O‘ahu.
“Last year, SKA had only one swimmer make it to zones,” said SKA coach Billy Brown, “This year, we have five. That’s incredible. These kids really have earned their places on Team Hawai‘i. We are so excited for them and know they will do well.”
Brown will be part of the SKA contingent that will be at the Veterans Memorial Aquatic Center where the 2009 USA-S Western Zone Championships will be held Aug. 4-6.
Stacey Machorek, an SKA parent and leader, said the zone competition rotates annually, and this year, will be held in Hawai‘i. Last year’s tournament was held in Oregon.
States sending representatives to the zone tournament include Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawai‘i, Montana, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah and Wyoming.
Aaron Pigott, Anya Littlefield, Emma Rausch, Evan Hamamoto and Yasmine Ware are the five SKA swimmers that will become part of the 47-swimmer Team Hawai‘i at the meet, Machorek said.
Team Hawai‘i is made up of some of the top swimmers from across the state and swimmers had to achieve ZONE times, or be personally invited to become part of the team.
Each of the SKA swimmers is scheduled to swim in six individual events, plus relays.
