LIHU‘E — The Kapa‘a Warriors headed off-island for their second preseason matchup, facing Waiakea at Wong Stadium on the Big Island, Friday night, but came away on the wrong side of a 15-12 final score.
Trailing 9-0 in the fourth quarter, Kapa‘a rallied to put two scores on the board, but ultimately came up short after some early missed opportunities.
A 16-0 shutout win over Kalani on Aug. 15 showed a promising defense that once again Friday displayed the capability for a successful season.
However, locked in a scoreless battle in the second quarter, a Kapa‘a interception gave the Waiakea offense its best scoring chance to that point. They took advantage when Kekoa Mahi ran it in for the touchdown. The extra point was no good and Waiakea took a 6-0 lead to the locker room at halftime.
Kapa‘a threatened in the second half when quarterback Marshall Adkisson launched a deep pass that fell into the hands of receiver Aaron Nagao at the Waiakea 10-yard line. However, they were unable to punch it in and still needed a touchdown to tie or take the lead.
Running back Darren Taylor peeled off a nice run to put Kapa‘a back in range to score, but a lost fumble ended that drive.
The comeback gained steam late in the fourth quarter with two trips into the end zone, but Kapa‘a just ran out of time, not energy, in the tough loss.
Late scoring details were unavailable before press time.
The junior varsity started off the night’s action, playing to a
7-7 tie in the opening contest.
They got out to a 7-0 lead in the first half with a touchdown by quarterback Ka‘awa Solomon.
