The Waimea Menehune played their second preseason game Saturday night, a 21-0 loss at the hands of Maui High School in Maui.
Waimea was hoping to rebound after a 14-6 loss to Hawai‘i Preparatory Academy at home in its first preseason game on Aug. 21.
Trailing 7-0 at halftime after a Kekoa Padilla three-yard touchdown run late in the second quarter, Waimea showed a strong defensive effort in a back-and-forth third quarter.
However, turnovers thwarted many efforts to put points on the board as they had five lost fumbles in the second half.
Maui added a touchdown on a 29-yard pass from Vevesi Uta to A.J. Reyes in the fourth quarter and the final score on a 30-yard interception return with seven seconds left.
Head coach Keali‘i Aguiar and his team now head back home and have two weeks off before their first Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation action. They will open their season with a home date against Kaua‘i on Sept. 18.
