KAPA‘A — Karl Kim, a faculty member at the University of Hawai‘i’s Department of Urban and Regional Planning, will discuss “Identifying Kaua‘i’s Important Agricultural Lands,” hosted by the Wailua-Kapa‘a Neighborhood Association, a news release states.
The event, free and open to the public, is from 6-8 p.m., Aug. 24, at the Kapa‘a Library meeting room.
This meeting replaces the fourth-Saturday-of-the-month W-KNA meeting.
Kaua‘i is the first county to conduct the Important Ag Lands study and Kim has been awarded that contract, the release says.
Hawai‘i’s Constitution requires the state to conserve and protect agricultural lands, promote diversified agriculture, and increase agricultural self-sufficiency.
Kim will explain the process whereby counties must identify and map potential IAL in consultation with the public, landowners, agricultural organizations and the Department of Agriculture, using eight criteria such as water availability and soil quality.
