LIHU‘E — “This is all in keeping with the green theme,” Janine Rapozo said Monday.
The county Transportation Agency director joined Kaua‘i Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr. and Laurel Brier, representing Apollo Kaua‘i, in presenting prizes to the winners of the energy consumption awareness campaign at the recent Kaua‘i County Farm Bureau Fair.
“Apollo Kaua‘i approached the county before the fair and wanted some ideas on how to turn the event into something consumers and residents could benefit from while helping with the energy sustainability program,” said Beth Tokioka of the Mayor’s Office.
That meeting resulted in people with their electric bills trying to earn the bicycle premium by showing reductions in usage at one of the county booths at the fair.
“We had three months of reduction in use,” said Linda Alfiler, the winner of the new bicycle that was presented through the collaborative efforts of Kaua‘i Cycle and Kaua‘i Island Utility Cooperative.
Zina Dizol of the Big Save purchasing office was named the winner of the annual pass on The Kaua‘i Bus.
“I’m giving this to my grandson who is in the Waimea High School Jr. ROTC program,” Dizol said. “Sometimes when he gets out of Jr. ROTC, the regular bus has already left and he has no way to get home. This way, he’ll have the pass and can always catch The Kaua‘i Bus.”
