Aloha, enjoy a happy day
Sunshine is abundant and free! We live in a home powered and lit by sun shining on photovoltaic panels.
PV solar electricity is produced without polluting our air, we have no monthly electric bill, PV panels are silent and reliable and with a solar water heater, we sit in our hot tub and wonder why everyone else on Kaua‘i isn’t enjoying the benefit of this wonderful technology.
The government is putting up PV panels on military bases, PMRF, Pearl Harbor, Hickam AFB and Barbers Point Naval Station are powered by sunlight. Wilcox Hospital, the Hyatt Pioneer and many more businesses are planning to produce electricity using photovoltaic systems.
In the long run, PV solar systems are cheaper, non-polluting, reliable and the smarter way to light and power our lives. KIUC reports watts used by Kaua‘i residents is less, the price of oil is less, but they want to raise the rates and increase board members salaries.
Like the legislator who introduced the gas cap law, which made him, as a Tesoro stockholder, a lot of money. It appears the KIUC board members are dragging their heels in facilitating and implementing PV solar electric systems far superior way to produce electricity, which would benefit all of Kaua‘i’s residents.
To the KIUC board we say, do what is best for the consumers not what is best for your own personal gain. Photovoltaic electrical systems are the best way for Kaua‘i to produce electricity and we have many friends who are enjoying the power from the sun and hope the government and KIUC help to establish this superior technology for the betterment and enjoyment of everyone on Kaua‘i and the whole world.
Let there be light affordably with no pollution and no dependency on oil from foreign lands. Peace, light, love, energy, liberty, and freedom from ignorance and greed.
P.S. Thank you Department of Highways for paving the potholes on the north side, keep going, no stop. Fix all the pukas.
Mahalo for a smooth ride!

Unemployment office withholding funds
Since July 23, 2009, I periodically visited the unemployment office to ensure I qualified for the Emergency Unemployment Compensation once my original claim ended. I would “zero-out” at $283 less than my regular weekly compensation and I was told it would be included as back-pay when EUC begins.
When my first EUC check came, and I am so very grateful for this emergency help, the $283 was not included for the week ending Sept. 5. Now the UI reps are telling me there is nothing that can be done; that I am not entitled to a full week’s pay.
I am seeking the help of our Hawai‘i government leaders to please alert UI to release to the unemployed these “missing funds” (that occurs between claims) from EUC and allow it to live up to its name of being emergency compensation.
Nothing I was told when I met with UI reps, and nothing I read in the EUC information sheets provided to me in any way led me to believe I would not receive a full week’s compensation between claims.
Where is UI’s heart for those of us already agonizing about being unemployed and do not need more hurt put on us by denying a full week’s pay in between claims. Please help us.

Sorry isn’t good enough
This is in reference to your article “Monk seal shooter pleads guilty” (The Garden Island, Sept. 26).
We are outraged and in disbelief that Vidinha will likely face only 90 days in jail and a paltry “special assessment” of $25 for killing one of the most endangered seals in the world!
And since the female monk seal was near term with a pup, Vidinha should have been charged for killing two seals!
Vidinha is guilty of a heinous crime and should have received the maximum sentence of one year in jail and a $50,000 fine.
Unfortunately, the outcome of Vidinha’s sentencing sets a dangerous precedent for other endangered monk seals. Hardly a deterrent to Vidinha, or other potential perpetrators!
We do not accept Vidinha’s apology.

Everybody out
I have been following the actions in Washington with great interest. If it weren’t so serious, the health debate would make great comedy.
As a result, I have reached the following decision. I will vote against everyone in office regardless of party affiliation. I also am encouraging anyone concerned with our government to do likewise.
I am concerned with the great expenditures. We can’t blame Obama for all of it. All monies must be appropriated by Congress and they don’t even read the bills. Congressmen don’t deserve to be there.
