LIHU‘E — In accordance with the collective bargaining settlement and to recover energy savings to meet the budget shortfall, Kaua‘i Community College, as well as the rest of the University of Hawai‘i System will be closed to the public during the following non-instructional days: Nov. 27; Dec. 21-24; Dec. 28-31; March 22-25.
Employees who will be reporting to work during these times may be assigned to an alternate work site to realize energy savings, a news release says.
Dr. Helen Cox, chancellor for Kaua‘i Community College, wants to be sure that this information is given to the public early and often, so that the College can continue to meet needs of its students. She has released the following statement to that end.
“The UH system has selected dates for closure that are non-instructional and traditionally very slow for all college activities. In addition, we are making sure that time-sensitive, critical services will continue, such as processing grades and transcripts. The faculty, staff, and administration at Kaua‘i Community College have a clear focus on fulfilling our mission to serve our students and members of the Kaua‘i community. Our vigilance will continue as we do our part in addressing budget challenges and personnel contracts.,” she said.
To enable KCC employees to better serve current and prospective students, planning for the 2010 Spring semester, the chancellor is urging students to come to the college to complete registration and the financial aid process as soon as possible, before our Dec. 21 -Jan. 1 closure, she said.
If that is not possible, students will still be able to register on campus Jan. 4. For continuing students who are applying for aid for Spring 2010, the KCC Financial Aid Office set a priority deadline of Dec. 4 in order to process aid on time.
In addition, registration for 2010 Spring Semester through KCC’s Web site is continuous via the MyUH Portal link. Late Registration for continuing and new students is Jan. 11-15; however, she said it is always better to get into classes at the very beginning of the semester, which starts on Jan. 11.
For the closure days after Thanksgiving and around the Christmas and New Year’s holidays, the college has already made specific plans in line with the chancellor’s statement.
On Friday, KCC will be closed with the exception of the Performing Arts Center, where E Pule Kakou of Kaua‘i and KESU Radio will present, “Thanksgiving Prayers & Music,” an event free to the public.
Dec. 21-24 and Dec. 28-31, the campus will be closed to the public aside from the following exceptions:
— Health & Wellness Center will be open Mondays and Wednesdays from noon to 4 p.m., for Family Planning appointments only.
— The Performing Arts Center will be open for previously contracted events.
— For classes with the Office of Continuing Education and Training, consult the KCC webpage for a full description our calendar of classes, or call 245-8318.
The College will issue details about our plan of operation for the 2010 Spring Recess in advance to alert everyone, the release says.
Information will be posted throughout the campus and at www.kauaicc.hawaii.edu to help students and the community during these periods.
For questions about the new closing dates for KCC, call the Chancellor’s Office at 245-8280.
