Frank Kleckner of the United States Marine Corps League took advantage of the Black Friday discounts to get a jump start on this year’s Toys for Tots campaign by camping out at Walmart from about 3 a.m. Friday.
Frank is a veteran of doing these big campaigns and had American flags taped with red duct tape to match the paint on the barriers outside Walmart, creating a nice avenue-of-flags effect that was shared by the Leadership Kaua‘i group of Vonn Ramos, Marci Buratti and Ken Shimonishi trying to raise funds to keep the program going by selling Krispy Kreme doughnuts. Brenda Jose and her daughter Uakea (former Kekaha cheerleader) discovered that if you got a box of doughnuts, there was a Krispy Kreme hat. Uakea said just like the kind you got when you got cafeteria duty except it said ‘Krispy Kreme.’
Hats off to Jason Fujinaka and Greg Mosley of FM97 for doing a great job with The Kaua‘i Christmas Parade, Saturday, hosted by the Garden Island Federal Credit Union, the Kaua‘i Teachers Federal Credit Union and Kukui Grove Center (Jonell Kaohelaulii couldn’t march since she was a judge).
But Ron Wiley was there (was that Marc Valentin driving the Ford?)) and Denise Roberts said she wiped out the supply of bananas for the parade.
OK, this Friday is the Lights on Rice parade … get there early for the best seats!
