LIHU‘E — Heavy rains and flooding over the past few days has caused water service interruptions for county Department of Water customers in Hanalei town and parts of Wailua Houselots.
Although repair crews have been working to fix the electrical problems with the Hanalei water tank and a major pipeline break, the repairs are not expected to be completed until sometime today, a county news release states.
Hanalei residents will continue to experience water service interruption until the repair work is done. People are encouraged to conserve water.
The tanks in Hanalei are empty, according to a county news release.
A water tanker with potable water has been placed at Hanalei Park across from the courthouse, the release says.
Residents need to bring their own containers to transport water.
In addition to the electrical problems at the well, there is a leak in one of the pipelines that allows Princeville Utilities to feed DOW’s Hanalei system.
Currently, residents near the Hanalei Pier are getting water from Princeville, and the rest of Hanalei will also receive water from Princeville as work crews systematically test the system to locate the leak, the release says.
Earlier Sunday, a pipeline break caused a water outage in Wailua Houselots.
It was repaired and normal water service has been restored to the area, the release says.
Water tankers with potable water were placed at Wailua Houselots Park while residents there experienced water service interruptions.
Residents in Wailua Houselots on upper Haleilio Road, most of Kihei Road and all of Kaulana Road were without water due to a watermain break, the release says.
However, residents on Waipouli and Hauiki roads should continue to boil their tap water until further notice, a county news release said Sunday evening.
Infiltration from surface water due to the heavy rains may have caused contimination. Fecal coliform or E coli bacteria could possibly be in the water, which might cause diarrhea, cramps, nausea, headaches or other symptoms.
Earlier Sunday, DOW officials went door-to-door delivering flyers to affected residents warning them of the possible contamination.
Plans have been made to flush the system today and the problem is expected to be resolved by Tuesday afternoon.
To ensure that their tap water is safe to use, affected residents should boil their water for five minutes and allow it to cool before using it.
