Events Kaua‘i, a theatre and event planning company, presents “Steel Magnolias,” the quintessential story of friendship in Jan. 2010 at the KAPA Playhouse in Puhi.
In the haven of Truvy’s beauty salon, six feisty Louisiana ladies come together to share secrets and bare souls, throwing in a little neighborly gossip for good measure. From weddings to divorces, babies to funerals, new beginnings to happy endings, they weather every event in their lives with grace, determination, and perfectly coifed hair.
Directed by Bobbee Downs, this strongly cast production will highlight the strengths of Harling’s 1987 Off-Broadway comedy-drama. Well-known local actress Dottie Bekeart serves as a consultant to the production, and Kaua‘i High School senior Megan Ross is assistant director.
Shannon Link, who is in the present production of “Cinderella,” plays Truvy, the salt-of-the-earth salon owner. Former “Bye Bye Birdie” Broadway star, Vivian Rose, will dispense the dry quips of wisecracking widow Clairee Belcher and Lolli Hagen plays the role of cranky neighborhood nemesis, Ouiser. Susan LeHoven, a relative newcomer to live theatre, will bring an interesting mix of fragility and perkiness to Annelle, the runaway wife who morphs into a born-again Christian and mom-to-be before the play is over.
Laurie Aguayo will play the central role of M’Lynn, a worried mother, typically overbearing and protective, who insists that only she knows what is best for her diabetic daughter Shelby. Jen Downs will bring a beautiful poignancy to the character of Shelby, saying, “I’d rather have thirty minutes of wonderful than a whole lifetime of nothing special.”
Ticket reservation lines will be announced late-November.
