LIHU‘E — The Warriors used a 21-4 run to close out the game on their way to a 70-61 comeback win over Chaminade, Wednesday night at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Trailing 57-49 with 6:36 remaining in the second half, Hawai‘i (4-4) took the game into its own hands and forced the issue, getting to the free throw line time and time again in order to shrink its deficit and ultimately pull away in the closing minutes.
Roderick Flemings had a double-double for the Warriors with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Hiram Thompson had 17 points and eight rebounds.
Shane Hanson led Chaminade (1-4) with 14 points.
The free-throw line was the difference, most notably in the second half where Chaminade was whistled for 17 fouls to Hawai‘i’s seven. For the night, the Warriors were 21 of 28 from the charity stripe. Chaminade was 11 for 18.
That was the saving grace for UH, which struggled mightily from the floor all night. The team went 23 of 58 (.397) from the floor, including just 3 of 19 (.158) from the 3-point line.
