Boys & Girls Club of Hawai‘i, Lihu’e Outreach, with funding from the Hawai‘i Partnership to Prevent Underage Drinking and assistance from Mothers Against Drunk Driving will be launching an underage drinking awareness campaign.
Boys & Girls Club members and staff will be sign-waving from 2:30-3:15 p.m. along Rice Street in front of the Historic County Building and along Kaumuali‘i Highway in front of the YMCA, asking citizens to drink responsibly this holiday season, a news release says.
Times Supermarket is participating in the campaign by placing stickers on alcohol products reminding youth that the law requires buyers and consumers of alcohol be 21 years of age.
The campaign aims to educate youth, adults and merchants about the dangers of irresponsible alcohol consumption. According to a Hawai‘i Department of Health survey, 16.5 percent of Kaua‘i’s students report dependence or abuse of alcohol by their senior year. A National Highway Transportation Safety Administration study also reports that with 52 percent of motor-vehicle deaths caused by alcohol, Hawai‘i leads the nation.
