Winner in the Patriot’s Pen essay contest, Kapa‘a Middle School eighth grader, Madisson Hinkel was awarded a Certificate of Achievement and check for $100 dollars for her winning essay on, “When is the Best Time to Honor our Military Heroes?”
The Patriot’s Pen program is an annual contest sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Sixth, seventh and eighth graders are invited to submit an essay on the annual theme determined by the VFW national headquarters. The 2010 theme will be “Does Patriotism still Matter?”
Hinkel’s winning essay was sent to Honolulu for the state competition. Prizes were awarded to the top three places at the state level and the winning essay is sent for the national competition. Cody Palmer, an eighth grader from Saint Catherine’s School in Kapa‘a came in second overall and was awarded a certificate and a check for $50. His essay was also included in the state competition.
On Kaua‘i awards were presented to the top three places. In third place was Kapa‘a Middle School eighth-grader Kekai Gonsalves.
The top essays from the other grades were also presented with awards. The overall best essay for seventh graders was D. J. Lacaden of St. Catherine’s. The top essay for sixth graders was Alex Croyden, also from St. Catherine’s.
The contest will again be sponsored next year by the Kaua’i VFW post.
