Charles Sumera
Charles “Chale” Herman Sumera of Lihu‘e died at Wilcox Memorial Hospital on Jan. 22, 2010, at age 46. Born in Honolulu on May 23, 1963, he worked with the State Housing Authority as a groundskeeper.
He is survived by his parents, Herman and Guillerma “Irma” Sumera; brother, Andrew (Jessica Choy) Sumera; sister, Susan (Brian) Caseria, all of Hilo; nieces, Kamalei Caseria of O‘ahu and Brooke Caseria of Hilo; nephew Ranson Yoneda of Hilo; numerous uncles, aunts, and cousins.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, Jan. 28, at King’s Cathedral and Chapel in ‘Ele‘ele Shopping Center (next to Ace Hardware Store) with visitation at 9:30 a.m. and services at 11 a.m.
A memorial service will also be held on the Big Island.
Kauai Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home assisted the Sumera family with arrangements.
Nancy Valente
Nancy Barbara Valente of ‘Ele‘ele died Jan. 25, 2010, at Wilcox Memorial Hospital at age 73. Born Nov. 9, 1937 in Waimea, she was a groundskeeper with DynaElectron.
She was preceded in death by parents Raymond and Mercy Pantorilla; daughter Darlene J. Balocan; brother Raymond Pantorilla Jr.; and sister Linda Reponte.
She is survived by son George S. Valente III (Lapule) of Waimea; daughters Valerie J. Tanigawa of Koloa, Apryle (Edward) Sarmiento of Kekaha, Lisa (Emong) Millare of Hanapepe and Tracy M. Valente of Hanapepe; 18 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; sisters Emily Pareganog of San Diego, Calif., Dora Habagat of Koloa, Clara Tacub of Kekaha and Shirley Martin of Honolulu; numerous uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Service will be Saturday, Feb. 6, at St. Theresa Catholic Church, Kekaha. Visitation is from 10 to 11 a.m. and Mass is at 11 a.m.
Casual attire is suggested. Arrangements are being handled by Garden Island Mortuary.
Mariano Bajit
Mariano Sansano Bajit of Kalaheo died Jan. 15, 2010, at Wilcox Memorial Hospital at age 88. Born on Dec. 21, 1921, in Villasis, Pangasinan, Philippines, he was a retired groundskeeper with Grove Farm Homestead Nuhuo Corporation.
He was preceded in death by his wife Tomasa Bajit.
He is survived by his sons Leonides (Juliet) Bajit and Melchor (Milagros) Bajit, both of Kaua‘i; daughters Maxima (Rolando) Jardin of Kaua‘i, Antonia Bajit of Kaua‘i, Olivia (Pablo) Antolin of Kaua‘i and Teresita Bajit of Honolulu; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m., Mass at 10:30 a.m., on Saturday, Jan. 30, at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Kalaheo. Burial at Lihu‘e Cemetery. Casual attire is suggested.
Arrangements are being handled by Garden Island Mortuary.
Shigenobu Kobashigawa
Shigenobu “Shige” Kobashigawa of Koloa died Jan. 18, 2010, at Kaua‘i Veterans Memorial Hospital at age 84. Born on March 18, 1925, in Kekaha, he was a carpenter with Kaua‘i Builders.
He is survived by his wife Gladys Kobashigawa; sons Bert (Pat) Kobashigawa of Las Vegas, Lyle (Mary Ann) Kobashigawa of Hanapepe and Gregg Kobashigawa of Koloa; daughters Lynn (John) Pahk of Sunset Beach, O‘ahu, and Susan (Kenneth) Taniguchi of Kapa‘a; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; brother Matsusuki Kobashigawa of Honolulu; nieces and nephews.
Visitation from 9:30 to 10 a.m., service from 10 to 11 a.m., on Saturday, Jan. 30, at Kaua‘i Veterans Cemetery Pavilion in Hanapepe. Burial to follow.
Casual attire is suggested and the family requests that flowers be omitted.

Vicente Cubangbang
Vicente Afaga Cubangbang of Lihu‘e died Jan. 10, 2010, at Wilcox Memorial Hospital at age 89. Born Dec. 7, 1920, in Cabaruan Bacarra Ilocos Norte, Philippines, he retired as a groundskeeper for Coco Palms and also worked for Tomato Farms in Hilo.
He is survived by his wife, Enriqueta Acob Cubangbang; 11 children, Martina Cubangbang, Josefina (Bert) Ventura, Lucrecia (Reynoldo) Aurelio, Leo (Jesusa) Cubangbang, Ross (Jocelyn) Cubangbang, Carlos (Helen) Cubangbang, Felino (Dominga) Cubangbang, Evaristo (Eilza) Cubangbang, Silverio (Eleanor) Cubangbang, Corazon (Angel) Cruz and Greg (Jane) Cubangbang; four sisters, Victoria Cubangbang Budua, Felicidad Cubangbang Acob, Remedios Cubangbang Acob, Evarista Cubangbang Afaga; two brothers, Simplicio and Andres Cubangbang; 23 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Friends may visit with the family on Friday, Jan. 29, at Borthwick Mortuary chapel in Koloa from 6 to 9 p.m., and again on Saturday, Jan. 30, at Immaculate Conception Church from 8 to 9:45 a.m. where Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial to follow at Kalapaki Bay Memorial Park Cemetery.
