KAPA‘A — A grant from the Young Brothers Community Advisory Board will enable the 81 preschool children at the K.I.D.S. School and their families to enjoy books.
Phyllis Kunimura, director of K.I.D.S. School, said through a generous grant from Young Brothers and the national First Book Marketplace, a nonprofit online store selling brand new award-winning books at deeply discounted prices, K.I.D.S. School will be able to purchase and give away books to families.
Young Brothers understands the importance of early literacy, Kunimura said in a release.
“Ninety percent of brain development takes place from ages 0-5 years, and the earlier families start reading to their children, the better equipped they will be in later years,” the preschool director said. “K.I.D.S. School appreciates the opportunity given by Young Brothers through its grant program and to First Book Marketplace so the 81 children at K.I.D.S. School and their families can benefit.”
Research demonstrates that reading stories to children on a daily basis prepares them for a love of reading.
The First Book program allows the school to share books with the children in the preschool first, then allowing each child to select their favorites to take home and keep. This sets the tone for more reading to take place in the homes and families can add these books to their own home libraries.
