WAIMEA — First babies bid farewell to 2009 and welcomed 2010 at the Kaua‘i Veterans Memorial Hospital.
Jaxston Dray Lagoc heralded the new year after being born at 3:22 p.m., the first child of Jacquelyn Lagoc of Kaumakani.
Just a couple of doors down the hall, Kierien Jacinto was fast asleep with her parents, Brandon Jacinto and Kolomana Perreira-Basconcillo. Instead of becoming the new year’s first baby, Kierien earned the honor of being 2009’s final birth, coming into the world at 7:48 p.m. New Year’s Eve.
“We have the first and the last baby at KVMH,” said Jenneen Ragasa, one of the nurses on duty at the KVMH Maternity ward. “We have been busy all day, and with Jaxston being born in the afternoon, we’ll be here until late tonight.”
Lorraine Lagoc, Jacquelyn’s sister, said their parents missed the event because after being at home for several years, decided they would visit relatives on O‘ahu this year.
But Jacquelyn was not without support as her brother Nelvin and sisters Lorrine and Channel were with her along with Jaxston’s cousins Alyxandra and Sean.
“The Lagoc family is getting bigger,” Lorraine said. “Jaxston is the third grandchild and he’s got long feet and hands.”
Jaxston tipped the scales at four pounds, 15.04 ounces and arrived ahead of his scheduled due date of Jan. 15, Lorraine said.
Kieren weighed in at seven pounds, 14 ounces and is the first child for Brandon and Perreira-Basconcillo.
To celebrate Jaxston’s honor of being the first baby born on Kaua‘i in 2010, Ragasa said the nurses in the KVMH Maternity ward put together a nice gift basket complete with a headband for mom announcing “Happy New Year.”
