• Editor’s note: This is the last article of a three-part series about North Shore businesses coping with economic challenges.
Paul Appelblom of Deep Shade opened a second kiosk in the Princeville Shopping Center last year — in spite of the economic downturn — because he saw a need for reasonably priced, but attractive products that appeal to locals and visitors alike.
The original kiosk sells sunglasses, Hawaiian tee shirts, hats, and woven hand bags — all of which can be bought for oneself or for gifts; whether one needs gifts to take back to the mainland or something to wear here on Kaua’i.
He has made the calculated risk of expanding because it is quick and easy to shop at the kiosk and since the two kiosks are side by side, he did not have to increase his manpower and wages to do so because they can be staffed by the same person.
“A positive attitude, a strong work ethic, and a passion to succeed is what has kept me successful even in a down economy” is Paul Appelblom’s answer to coping with the economic downturn.
