LIHU‘E — Friends at the Kaua‘i Visitors Bureau say the legendary chickens here are like the weather, meaning they are both the most complained about and most complimented about regarding visitors’ experiences on the island.
Well, a certain fowl who calls Po‘ipu Beach Park home also made herself at home in the tip bowl of a local bluegrass band, prompting a brand new song in the process.
Steve Farrell penned “Chicken in the Tip Bowl.”
“I was watching the renowned Happy Enchilatas bluegrass group playing in the Po‘ipu Beach Park one afternoon and I’ll be darned if a chicken didn’t fly up and nestle down in the monkeypod tip bowl on the picnic table to hang out,” he said.
“She barely fit. Anyway, I had to write a song for them about this goofy moment,” said Farrell, also a Po‘ipu resident.
After band members found out about the song, they gathered at Farrell’s Weliweli Tract subdivision home for beer, pupus and an impromptu jam session.
Farrell had the video camera rolling, and the result of that jam session can be viewed at www.thegardenisland.com.
“Just my luck now that this is the most popular song among us ragtag musicians here on the South Shore,” said Farrell.
“What a fate. I used to feel chicken, now I just feel fowl. Only on Kaua‘i, right?”
