NAWILIWILI — Swim Kaua‘i Aquatics got help from the Young Brothers Community Advisory Board to help raise awareness of the benefits of swimming for people suffering from arthritis.
The CAB grant which was presented to SKA coach Billy Brown and Kathleen Littlefield will help SKA’s objective to improve the health of children and adults suffering from arthritis on Kaua‘i while giving them skills to enjoy water and exercise, states an SKA release.
Exercise is the key to controlling pain and disability that can occur with arthritis in any age group. Medication is often not enough to maintain joint strength and function.
Low impact exercise provides some of the answers and water exercise programs offer low impact options for all levels of swimmers.
Arthritis is the leading cause of disability among adults 18 and over, and is one of the leading causes of disability in children. The SKA release states more than 300,000 children suffer from Juvenile Arthritis in the United States, making it one of the most common chronic pediatric health conditions.
SKA officials said the funds provided by Young Brothers Community Advisory Board will be used to help Kaua‘i’s community, children and adults suffering from arthritis swim towards better health.
Educational materials about arthritis and the benefits of swimming in helping with arthritis will be available at the YMCA of Kaua‘i, the site where SKA trains.
