LIHU‘E — The Boy Scouts of America landed in Hawai‘i in 1910 with the formation of the well-known Rainbow Patrol, sponsored by Punahou School.
A hundred years have passed and Boy Scout Troop 1, the formal designation of the Rainbow Patrol, is still flourishing.
The Boy Scouts of America, Aloha Council, Kaua‘i Chapter, was presented commendations by both the Kaua‘i County Council and Kaua‘i Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr. to celebrate the 100th anniversary of scouting in Hawai‘i.
Scouting and its mission remain constant and continue to flourish, states the council’s commendation. More than 19,000 young men and women regularly engage in scouting activities that encompass a wide range of educational programs and outdoor activities throughout the state.
“The Boy Scouts of America program was available to me when I was growing up, and will be here long after I’m gone,” said Tom Shigemoto, the Kaua‘i District Executive.
Kaua‘i celebrates 465 active scouts who will celebrate the theme “Celebrating the Adventure and Continuing the Journey” when the Aloha Council opens its Makahiki this year.
There were no special plans for the Aloha Council on Monday, the actual date of the 100th anniversary, said Kim Paglinawan of the Kaua‘i office of the Aloha Council.
The commendations come on the heels of the Kaua‘i District of the Boy Scouts of America celebrating its annual Leadership Recognition Dinner where Myles Uyesono was announced as the recipient of the Silver Beaver award, the highest honor a Scout leader can achieve.
Nancy Hubler was honored as the Tiger Den Leader, Diane Paleka for the Cub Den Leader, Kevin Blackstad for the Webelos Den Leader.
Anne Eulalio was the Cub Scouter of the Year and Ismael Cantu, one of the representatives at the commendation presentation, the Cub Master of the Year.
Calvin Paleka was honored as the Venturing Advisor of the Year and Dwayne Belmodis honored as the Scout Master of the Year.
Kahele Keawe was honored as the Unit Commissioner of the Year and Ron Velasco received the District Award of Merit.
Shigemoto invited the public to celebrate the adventures of Scouting when the annual makahiki opens on the grounds of the North Vidinha fields.
