LIHU‘E — People with addictions to drugs and alcohol spend a lot of time, money and effort to get high, said Malia Tokioka, executive director of Hope, Help and Healing Kaua‘i.
So it makes sense to get recovering addicts to learn to put the same type of effort into helping to raise money for their continuing sober journeys, she said.
Thus, participants in the Hope, Help and Healing Kaua‘i substance-abuse treatment and clean and sober living homes are being asked to donate time and items to the agency’s first-ever rummage sale, Monday, from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the parking lot of The Haleko Medical Building, 2978 Haleko Rd., in Lihu‘e, she said.
They will get credit toward their treatment costs for helping at the sale and donating items, she said.
Proceeds will go to provide services for those struggling with addictions who can’t afford treatment, she said.
“We’re trying to teach clients to invest in their recovery,” as they had previously invested lots of time, money and effort into getting high, she said.
There will be refreshments and live entertainment with Leahi (Tommy, Malia and Loke), and anyone who brings a non-perishable food item for donation to the Kaua‘i Food Bank will receive a discount on purchases made at the rummage sale.
Leahi will also donate CDs for sale at the rummage sale, which will feature a lot of brand-new items, she said.
All money collected will go to Hope, Help and Healing Kaua‘i for treatment and the clean and sober houses it operates, said Tokioka.
Those wishing to donate items may call Tokioka at 245-5213 or 634-3499, or e-mail her at malia@hhhk.org.
Donations may be arranged to be picked up, or may be dropped off at the Hope, Help and Healing Kauai office at the same location as the sale, Suite 101.
