LAWA‘I — A Kalaheo resident died Thursday after his Ford Mustang was struck head-on by a Kaua‘i Coffee delivery van that crossed the center line on Kaumuali‘i Highway in Lawa‘i, according to the Kaua‘i Police Department.
Glenn Doi, 59, was traveling toward Lihu‘e at around 9:20 a.m. when he collided with the westbound Kaua‘i Coffee vehicle operated by 61-year-old Lihu‘e resident William Corbett west of the Lawa’i Post Office near Mile Marker 10. Doi’s mustang was then rear-ended by an Infiniti operated by Ashlie Moriguchi, police said in a press release issued Thursday afternoon.
Moriguchi and Corbett were treated and released from Wilcox Memorial Hospital, where Doi was pronounced dead. Family members have been notified, the press release states.
Doi is Kaua‘i’s third traffic fatality of 2010. All three fatal accidents have occurred on the South Shore — one near Maluhia Road outside Koloa and another near the entrance to Kahili Mountain Park.
“Our entire organization has been saddened by today’s collision, which involved a company vehicle and driver. We extend our deepest sympathies to the family and friends who lost a loved one today,” Kaua‘i Coffee Company President and General Manager Wayne Katayama said in an e-mailed statement of condolence. “We have been and will continue to cooperate fully with county authorities who respond to and investigate these matters.”
Police closed both lanes of Kaumuali‘i Highway for approximately four hours as they investigated the crash. Westbound traffic was redirected to Akemama Road and eastbound traffic to Koloa Road until the on-site investigation was completed at some time before KPD emergency dispatchers announced the roadway was reopened at approximately 1:20 p.m.
