Island girls looking for win in season’s final game

LIHU‘E — The Island School girls basketball team wraps up its final game of the season tonight when it tips off against the Kapa‘a junior varsity squad at 5 p.m.

According to Island coach Cheryl Claypoole, the game is a make-up of an earlier scheduled game which was rained out.

The girls game precedes the varsity boys matchup at the Wilcox Gym at the Island School campus, where the Waimea boys varsity will square off against the Island boys.

During the previous Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation encounter in Waimea, the Menehune pulled off a nail-biter when Malcolm Carter brushed the twine at the buzzer to pull off the win.

The Island School girls team enters its final game with a 10-1 record following its 52-10 win over the Kaua‘i High School JV girls, Friday at the Kaua‘i High School gym.

Sisters Joy and Lauren Claypoole combined for 38 points in that victory, Lauren leading the way with a game-high 22 points scattered through four periods.

Joy finished with 16 points followed by Autumn Warnock, a seventh grader, notching 12 points. A pair from Tessa Mason, who played a pivotal role as low post in the first half, rounded out the Island victory.

Kaua‘i’s shooter, Casey Anacleto was held to just one-for-three at the charity stripe, a sharp contrast to her normal double-digit scoring ability.

Ashley Ramelb led the Junior Raiders with a single three-ball. Alexis Hernandez, a rebounding factor for the Raiders, Kaira Spencer, tall post coming off the bench, and Mariah Dias each finished with pairs.

The Kapa‘a High School varsity boys travel to the Kaua‘i High School gym to kick off the final leg of Round 2 with the junior varsity matchup tipping off at 5:30 p.m. The varsity game follows 20 minutes following the completion of the JV game.

A Kapa‘a victory would give it a 4-0 record in Round 2 and make a championship playoff much more likely after Kaua‘i won the Round 1 title with a 5-1 mark.

The Raiders currently sit at 2-1 in Round 2.
