HONOLULU – University of Hawai‘i men’s basketball head coach Bob Nash announced Wednesday that junior guard Jeremy Lay will have surgery to repair a hernia and will miss the remainder of the 2009-10 season, states a release from the UH athletic department.
“It’s an injury I decided to play through during the season,” Lay said. “It’s gotten bigger recently, the pain has worsened, and unfortunately it’s gotten to a point where surgery has become the best option.”
Lay has started the last six games and ranks second on the team in assists (54), 3-pointers made (28) and steals (17). The native of Oklahoma City, Okla., was named to the Outrigger Hotels Rainbow Classic all-tournament team during the season’s opening weekend and exploded for 26 points in the team’s loss to New Mexico on Nov 27. He has scored in double figures nine times this year and ranks fourth on the squad at 8.4 ppg. Earlier this season, the 6-foot guard had a streak of 25 consecutive free throws made, just three shy of the school record.
“We’ll certainly miss Jeremy’s production,” Nash said. “However, it gives an opportunity for our other guards to step up, and I’m confident they will.”
UH (9-14, 2-8 WAC) has seven regular-season games left on its schedule and is battling for a spot in the Western Athletic Conference Tournament, March 11-13. Next up for the Rainbow Warriors are a pair of road games at Louisiana Tech (Feb. 13) and New Mexico State (Feb. 15).
