LIHU‘E — Pono Tokioka was frustrated, slamming his club and tossing his ball after having to take four shots to approach the No. 9 hole at Puakea Golf Course Saturday.
Despite that bad hole, he came back to lead the Kaua‘i High School boys to their third straight Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation golf match.
Tokioka finished the day with a 76, his second-best season score, leading the Red Raiders with a 76.67 average after three matches.
The Raiders finished the round with a 317 over Kapa‘a (333) and Waimea (378). Island School fielded one golfer, Daniel Miller, who finished the day with a 114.
Kelli Oride finished with a two-over par 74 to lead the Kaua‘i girls to a 244 first place over Waimea’s 368.
Following Oride, Kaua‘i’s Taylor Viquelia and Daezsa Tomas, carding her first ace last Sunday at the Wailua No. 14, each finished with 85.
Waimea’s Mariah Paiste carded her season’s best score at 95 to lead the Menehune wahine in the absence of their No. 1 golfer, Melissa Kagawa.
Quincee Parongao finished with a 134, an improvement over her inaugural round last week, and Hamiha Arquette also improved over her previous round with a 139.
Levi Miyashiro, Kaua‘i’s No. 2 with a 79.67 average, finished two strokes off the pace with a 78 to add to Tokioka’s lead and Walter Castillo (81) and Braeden Robley (82) rounded out the Kaua‘i team scoring.
Weston Moniz, Kapa‘a No. 1 golfer with an 81 average, was joined by Ken Miyata, a newcomer from the Kaua‘i Junior Golf program, to lead the Warrior men as each golfer finished with 80.
Sean Mamaclay finished the round with an 85, his best score this season, for the No. 3 spot.
Jordan Guerrero rounded out the Kapa‘a team scoring with an 88. For Miyata, Mamaclay and Guerrero, Saturday’s round yielded the individual golfers’ best scores of the season.
Dylan Santos-Balisacan carded his best score of the season to lead the Waimea boys’ team scoring with a 79 followed by Joshua Matsusaka (97), Ken Morikawa (99) and Camden Nakashima (103), his second shot to the No. 9 hole getting the best lie of the field before his short game forced a two-putt.
KIF golfers get the weekend off before returning to the course on March 27 at the Wailua Golf Course where the first group tees off at 12:36 p.m.
