Lanakila Wilson’s eight points helped push Lihu‘e to a 23-15 edge over the Kaua‘i Ballers in the first of two games played Wednesday in the county’s 11 and Under boys basketball league.
Travis Girand of Lihu‘e and Jonah Howard of the Kaua‘i Ballers each finished with 11 points to lead their respective teams at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
Briggs Agu finished with a game-high 16 points to lead Westside to a 39-23 win over Team Central, which got 14 points from Kaone Miguel. Zachariah Ponting added 10 points to Agu’s tally in the win.
Lihu‘e, with coach Max Manera, will next face Hanakila with coaches Mike Stevens and Phil Baclayon at 9 a.m., Saturday at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
That game will be followed by Team Central going up against the Kaua‘i Ballers starting at 10 a.m.
Karen Matsumoto, helping with the officials and scorekeeping chores in the league, said the games were scored using a portable scoreclock with parts on order to repair the main scoreboard, which acted up during the Monday night outing.
She added that coach Dennis Agena of Kalakaua Basketball called and is excited about working with the Kaua‘i basketball players starting Monday at the Kilauea Neighborhood Center.
Matsumoto said that clinic will run Monday through Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and is co-sponsored by the county’s Parks and Recreation Department.
Agena will be accompanied by coach Brian Suezaki from Kona and student volunteers Varrick Suezaki of Kona, Jasmine Funtanilla and Joanna Nicolas of Moanalua High School on O‘ahu.
