BOCA BARRANCA, Costa Rica — The second stop on the Association of Surfing Professionals North America Longboard Qualifying Series is set to host some of the nation’s finest male and female competitive longboarding talent at the idyllic Costa Rican pointbreak of Boca Barranca at the ASP LQS 3-Star Costa Rica Pro, scheduled from April 8-11.
Surfers competing on the ASP LQS are out to finish within the top two on their respective regional ratings to earn a berth in the prestigious ASP World Longboard Tour. Once qualified, each competitor has the right to battle for the title of ASP World Longboard Champion.
North Carolina’s Tony Silvagni, 23, is fresh off his first ASP LQS win at the PLA Pro in Ocean Beach and heads to the upcoming event in Costa Rica with newfound confidence while leading the 32-man field of stacked longboarding talent into the event as the early season ratings leader.
“Now that I have won my first LQS contest, I am feeling very confident going into the Costa Rica event,” Silvagni said. “I have never surfed at Boca Barranca, but I have been to Costa Rica a couple of times and surfed Jaco and Nosara. I feel like I have the right equipment for the break, and have been practicing at a local spot near my house that is a real fun left to prepare for the left hand pointbreak at Boca Barranca. My passion for surfing is only matched by my love of traveling, and I can’t wait to catch some waves with the rest of the top longboarders at world class breaks around the globe.”
Leading the 16 women’s competitors will be reigning two-time ASP Women’s World Longboard Champion California’s Jen Smith, 24, who is currently in a tie for the ASP North America LQS ratings lead.
The ASP LQS 3-Star Costa Rica Pro holds a waiting period from April 8-11, 2010.
