FITZROY, Taranaki/New Zealand — Event organizers at the TSB Bank Women’s Surfing Festival have called competition off for the day, Wednesday with heavy onshore winds creating an unfavorable lineup at the main event site of Fitzroy Beach, according to a press release from the Association of Surfing Professionals.
The third stop on the 2010 ASP Women’s World Tour, the TSB Bank Women’s Surfing Festival completed the opening two rounds of competition Tuesday at a remote site along Surf Highway 45, and event organizers are looking to potentially run Round 3 Thursday morning before finishing on Friday.
“Conditions are not optimal this morning and we’ve called competition off for the day,” Dave Shipley, ASP Head Judge, said Wednesday. “We have improved conditions projected for the coming days so we’ll be back at 7 a.m. (Thursday) morning at Fitzroy to see if we can give Round 3 a start.”
When competition resumes, up first will be Hawai‘i’s Melanie Bartels, 27, against Brazil’s Bruna Schmitz, 20, in Heat 1 of Round 3.
The other two remaining Hawai‘i surfers, Coco Ho and Carissa Moore, will be going head-to-head in the day’s second heat.
Event organizers will reconvene Wednesday morning at 7 a.m. for a possible 7:30 a.m. start.
