LIHU‘E — Draws were announced for the Carlsmith Ball/Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association State Tennis Championships, Friday, as seeds were given to four KIF representatives.
Kaua‘i High School’s Sarah Kukino was awarded the highest seed, taking No. 2 in the Girls Singles bracket. Kukino went undefeated in KIF play on her way to the singles crown and was placed only behind top-seeded Sayo Tsukumoto of Kealakehe.
All first-round matches will be played Thursday, as Kukino will face Aleina Tanabe of Kalaheo High School (Kailua), scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m.
Fellow Red Raider Shay Orial will face Lahainaluna’s Kaila Nip in the first round. That match is set to get underway at 9:30 a.m.
In the Boys Singles bracket, Red Raider Chas Okamoto was awarded the fifth seed after a 6-0, 6-0 win over Island School’s Jeremy Randolf-Flagg in the KIF championship match. He will be taking on Kahuku’s Joshua Christensen in the first round, hitting the court Thursday at 9:30 a.m.
Randolf-Flagg drew a tough match in the opening round, as he will face No. 4 seed Robin Kiyabu of Punahou at 10:30 a.m.
The Boys Doubles team of Ryan Bicker and BJ Kai, representing Kaua‘i High School, will be the No. 8 seed and will take on Kamehameha Maui’s Devonte Llanes and Milton Kim at 8 a.m.
Raider teammates Otis Llewellyn and Jerik Centeno will also play at 8 a.m., going up against Kevin Maruyama and Jordan Darley of Pearl City. If successful there, Llewellyn and Centeno would likely take on the No. 1 seed, Punahou’s Paul Okuda and Travis Yoshimoto, in the second round.
Island School nabbed the eighth seed in the Girls Doubles bracket as Madison Duarte and Meghan Perias will take on St. Anthony’s Malia Ford and Alecia Ballesteros at 11:30 a.m.
Kapa‘a’s Alexsis Valdez and Makena McCluskey will take on the No. 7 seed, Baldwin High School’s Kelly Hamamura and Michele Saiki at 8 a.m.
The boys and girls brackets will begin with 32 singles players and 32 doubles teams, playing down to one state champion. Action will take place Thursday through Saturday at the Holua Tennis Center and Outrigger Keauhou Resort in Kailua Kona on the Big Island.
