KAPA‘A — Kaua‘i Police Sgt. Ezra Kanoho, Sgt. Mike Gordon and Lt. Hank Barriga will again climb into the bucket of Dennis Cortes’ Oceanic Time Warner Cable boom truck at 6 a.m., Thursday.
They will be lifted to the rooftop of Safeway in the Kaua‘i Village where the three law enforcement officers have pledged to remain until 2 p.m., Saturday, with the intent of raising a minimum of $25,000 for Special Olympics.
Kaua‘i Special Olympics athletes will be available to help the officers and greet contributors who are able to get premiums for their donations.
Shelly Gerardo, the Special Olympics communication officer, encouraged people to come early as premiums are limited.
Gerardo said donations can also be made online by visiting www.firstgiving.com/copontopkauai with all donations being secure, and the contributor being able to provide a message with his or her contribution.
“With more children joining Special Olympics Kaua‘i each year, and programs for our athletes being funded solely by fundraising, donations are needed now, more than ever,” Gerardo said in an e-mail.
Over the past 40 years, Special Olympics has grown from a modest program serving local athletes to become the world’s largest movement dedicated to promoting respect, acceptance, inclusion, and human dignity for people with intellectual disabilities through sports.
The power of sports transforms the lives of people with intellectual disabilities and also unites everyone by fostering community-building and civil society.
