LIHU‘E — You could probably say Ethyn Joslin has a need for speed.
Twice already in his young life he has been the fastest down the track with his hand-made miniature race car, capturing two first-place trophies in the annual Boy Scouts of America Pinewood Derby, the most recent one April 17 at the annual BSA Makahiki at the north Vidinha Stadium soccer fields.
Cub Scouts from Tigers to Webelos built and raced their hand-made creations down a gravity-fed track, and Joslin, a Wolf out of Pack 133 at St. Catherine School in Kapa‘a, beat them all.
The Cubs won similar Pinewood Derby races within their packs to qualify for the island finals, according to a press release.
Fellow Wolf Pack 133 member Brendan Melendez took third place, and a Bear from Pack 168, Brandon Marcos, took second place, and a Webelo from Pack 168, Zachary Hee, was fourth.
