Kaua‘i’s Levi Miyashiro shot his season-best round to lead the field at the first round of qualifying golf Saturday at the Wailua Golf Course.
Miyashiro fired a one-under par 71 to lead the boys and Kelli Oride fired a one-over par 73 to lead the girls.
Daezsa Tomas, coming off a hole-in-one fired at the Wailua course in a non-Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation round, fired her season-best round, a two-over par 74, just a stroke off Oride’s score.
Taylor Viquelia rounded out the girls’ showing on a 77.
Waimea did not field any of its girls for the round.
With Miyashiro assured of a state berth based on Kaua‘i winning the KIF title, the qualifying round serves as a basis for filling the open slots to the state tournament.
During Saturday’s opening round, all of the Red Raiders fired rounds in the 70s, save one.
Kapa‘a’s Sean Mamaclay, firing league-leading scores in the past two weeks, finished Saturday’s round with a three-over par 75, tying with Kaua‘i’s Mitch Keep and Pono Tokioka for second place.
Both Mamaclay and Keep are in contention for the open slot at the state tournament.
Following Miyashiro and Tokioka, Kaua‘i’s leading golfers in the qualifying round included Kai Adachi, Reyn Morioka and Braeden Robley, all tied at 79.
Following Mamaclay, Kenji Miyata finished at 84. Weston Moniz and Justin Uegawa tied for the third spot at 86.
Aaron Belmonte and Jordan Guerrero tied at 88 to round out the Warrior leaders.
Marius Foudila paced the Waimea team with an 86 followed by Ken Morikawa firing an 89, a stroke ahead of Shean Tavares’ 90. Ka‘imi Miyashiro finished with a 94 and Camden Nakashima carded a 97 to round out the Menehune leaders.
The final qualifying round plays Saturday at the Wailua Golf Course with the first group teeing off at noon.
