The deadline for the Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association Hall of Honor is April 30.
Natalie Iwamoto of the HHSAA announced there is a change of address for applicants to the Hall of Honor.
Completed applications should be mailed to: Hall of Honor, c/o Honolulu Advertiser Sports Dept., 605 Kapiolani Blvd., Honolulu, HI 96813. The post office box address listed previously has been closed.
Application forms are available at www.sportshigh.com for download. Iwamoto noted the application forms on the website have been revised to show the change of address.
Bill Arakaki, the Kaua‘i representative to the Hall of Honor selection committee, said he would like to see as many applications from Kaua‘i as possible.
Students in the State of Hawai‘i participating in any sport, or sports, approved by the HHSAA and who are completing their senior year of high school are eligible for consideration to the Hall of Honor, states the HHSAA website.
Athletic achievement is given primary consideration by the selection committee, but other factors taken into consideration include contributions to the team, versatility in sports, sportsmanship and dedication, character and behavior on and off the playing field, academic achievement, role in school activities outside of sports, and involvement in the community.
To be considered, applicants must complete the official HHSAA Hall of Honor nomination forms which can be found on the HHSAA website.
Supporting materials such as media clippings, statements, letters of reference or grade transcripts can accompany the nomination forms and are limited to eight one-sided 8.5×11-inch sheets. Materials exceeding this limit will not be considered and will be discarded without discretion.
In addition to the completed form and optional supporting materials, two photographs are required: a senior portrait and an action photograph. These will not be returned to the student and will be used during the Hall of Honor dinner program.
All paperwork must be received by the Honolulu Advertiser Sports Dept. no later than 5 p.m., April 30.
The selection committee will announce the 2010 honorees on May 17, and honorees will be acknowledged during the awards banquet on June 6 at the Sheraton Waikiki Hotel.
The HHSAA Hall of Honor was established in 1982 by the Nissan Motor Corp. in Hawai‘i to recognize athletic excellence and accomplishments of Hawai‘i’s high school athletes.
Twelve student athletes are selected annually for induction into the Hall of Honor selection committee. Along with the induction into the Hall of Honor, each student athlete receives a $2,000 college scholarship which can be used to offset college education expenses including tuition, books and room and board expenses.
The HHSAA Foundation took over the program from Nissan Motor Corp. in the fall of 2004.
