Kaua‘i Gymnastics to change locations
For Jack and Kay Leonard, the owners of Kaua‘i Gymnastics Academy, the countdown to June 7 has been a long time coming, according to a press release.
In 2005, Jack and Kay bought out Lisa Fairchild and took over as owners of Kaua‘i Gymnastics Academy, including the assumption of a lease in Puhi. They knew that the 1,875 square feet they were in would end up being too small for them, but the first time their lease was up for renewal was the height of the real estate market, so they couldn’t find the right combination of space and lease amount.
Along came the economic downturn shortly after they signed on for three more years. The surprise has been that even though the economy has been challenging, their gym keeps growing. This time as they came toward the end of their lease, along came the softness of the real estate market.
On Puhi Road, there are currently three buildings under construction right before Hanalima Street. KGA will occupy half (4,733 square feet) of the building directly behind Kilohana Lighting — the half that will be closest to Puhi Road. The actual entrance to the parking lot will be Hanahao Place — the first right after turning into Puhi Industrial Park.
The building is suitable for gymnastics and has no center wall or columns to work around. In addition, there will be two restrooms at the front of the space so parents and siblings will no longer have to walk through the gym to utilize them. There will even be a separate sink outside one of the restrooms so when the gymnasts just need to rinse off gym chalk, they can do so without waiting to use the restroom. There will even be an area inside for parents to watch and siblings to play with the ever-present variety of toys.
The Leonards are also installing the only full-sized (40’ x 40’) spring floor on the island. It will arrive and be installed just in time for the first classes in the new space.
In addition, KGA has expanded staff.
About six months ago, Tristana Fernandes moved back to the island to be closer to her mom. She has been putting her extensive dance background to work designing and coaching the team kids with their floor routines.
At the beginning of April, Jeff Amundson moved to the island to join the staff. He ran a gym in Oregon for many years and is qualified to coach from the smallest/lowest levels all the way up to Level 10. Amundson also has family on Kaua‘i.
KGA is currently located on Haleukana Street in the Puhi Industrial Park. The Spring Session began the week of March 29th. Phone 245-8863 or visit www.kauaigymnastics.com for the schedule.
Schools compete for green
Berry and Hawaiian Telcom Yellow Pages are once again challenging local schools to “Think Yellow, Go Green” and reduce their environmental footprint. Berry is kicking of its annual yellow pages recycling program and schools on the Big Island, Kaua‘i, Lana‘i, Maui and Molokai will compete to recycle the most telephone directories per student for cash prizes.
Saturday marks the kickoff of the month-long program. With the new 2010 HTYP directories distributed in April, it’s the ideal time to recycle outdated yellow pages at participating schools. Directories will also be accepted during specific hours at Garden Isle Disposal.
Schools that collect the most directories per student will be awarded a cash prize of $800 for first place, $600 for second place, $400 for third place, $300 for fourth place and $200 for fifth place.
At the close of the competition on May 31, the recycled directories will be shipped to Island Shell in Honolulu. The phone books will then be converted into oil-absorbent materials and used to manufacture home insulation and mulch for companies such as Green Lava Hydro-Mulch and InCide Pest Control Cellulose Insulation.
Visit www.thinkyellowgogreen.com or www.barrymeansbusiness.com for a list of participating schools or to find out more information.
Biotech firm part of SciTech Day
Honolulu biotech firm Synedgen introduced local 6th through 8th grade students to the strange and interesting properties of polymers found in every day household items at the Hawai‘i Science & Technology Council’s Sci-Tech Day on Friday at Leeward Community College.
Synedgen used hands-on, interactive experiments to help students learn first-hand how they are polymer scientists every day. Synedgen’s antimicrobial technology is based on a natural biopolymer, and is manufactured at their production facility on O‘ahu.
A joint project of the Hawai‘i Science and Technology Council/Institute and the University of Hawai‘i, Sci-Tech day engages Hawaiian biotech, energy, engineering and software development companies with local students.
93 finalists in ‘Olelo video competition
From a record 575 entries statewide, 93 videos have been named as finalists in the Seventh Annual ‘Olelo Youth Xchange Video Competition. The finalists come from public and private schools all across O‘ahu, as well as the Big Island, Kaua‘i and Maui.
Youth Xchange is the state’s largest youth video competition and has doubled the number of entries over the past three years.
Youth Xchange videos are competing in five broad categories and five sponsored categories. Broad categories include: public service announcement, news, short, animation and mini-documentary. There are three age divisions: elementary, intermediate and high school. Students with professional experience compete in the expert category. Sponsored subjects include global warming, HI-5 recycling, peacemaker, start living healthy and traffic safety.
A panel of local news media and filmmaking professionals, as well as subject experts have judged the 2010 Youth Xchange entries. Winners will be announced at the Youth Xchange Awards Banquet on May 17 at the JW Marriott Ihilani Resort & Spa at Ko Olina Resort & Marina, which will be attended by all finalists (educators and student production teams). Sony video cameras will be awarded to the winning schools of each category.
