KEKAHA — Hanapepe is one win away from the Kaua‘i Protect Our Nation’s Youth baseball league championship.
The Hanapepe blueshirts capitalized on Kekaha pitching for four runs in the first inning en route to a 15-3 win over Kekaha in the first of three make-up games, Thursday at the Kekaha field.
With the win, Hanapepe improves to 8-2 in the standings while Kekaha drops to 6-4. Lihu‘e, currently sitting at 8-4, and Kapa‘a, 0-12, have already completed their league play and await the outcome of today’s doubleheader at Hanapepe Stadium.
Dondi Viquelia, the Kaua‘i PONY commissioner, said all Hanapepe needs to do is win one of the two games today to claim the championship of the league.
If Kekaha sweeps the double-header, there will be a three-way tie for the lead between Lihu‘e, Hanapepe and Kekaha.
In that event, there will be a tie-breaker ruling based upon runs scored, Viquelia said.
The first pitch in today’s doubleheader is scheduled for 10 a.m.
The Kaua‘i PONY baseball league will host a single-elimination tournament starting May 25. If necessary, a championship game will be played June 1 due to the Lihu‘e Baseball League Memorial Day Bash.
That tournament will feature 32 off-island teams converging on the Lihu‘e County Park to play their counterparts locally.
