LIHU‘E — Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr. said he was proud to be able to present the county’s legal staff with a proclamation celebrating Law Week recently.
“We have the best,” Carvalho said as he acknowledged each member of the Kaua‘i Young Lawyers Division of the Hawai‘i State Bar Association during the presentation.
The purpose of Law Week is to reserve a special time for the American people to celebrate their liberties, states the proclamation presented by the mayor to Ian Jung, a deputy county attorney and president of the Kaua‘i Young Lawyers Division of the HSBA.
“Law Week reminds us that our right to justice cannot be taken for granted and must be nurtured so we can realize the dream of a truly democratic society,” the proclamation states.
Michael Dahilig, in an e-mail, said Law Week celebrates access to justice. This year’s theme is “Law In the 21st Century: Enduring Traditions, Emerging Challenges.”
“Everyone should have access to the law, and we’re excited to serve our community,” said Jung in the e-mail.
The proclamation states that, “by virtue of the foresightedness of our founding fathers, access to justice is a right guaranteed to all Americans and is still sought by many people around the world.”
The Young Lawyers Division includes all HSBA members in good standing under the age of 36, or those members admitted to their first bar for less than five years, regardless of age, Dahilig said.
The HSBA promotes standards for the practice of law in Hawai‘i and maintains a list of lawyers certified by the bar association and traditionally recognizes Law Week from May 2 to May 8.
