KALALAU — Emergency crews recently rescued three injured hikers in a 24-hour period on Na Pali Coast, sources said.
Rescue 3 from Kaua‘i Fire Department and Air-1 from Inter-Island Helicopters responded to the first call around 2 p.m., Friday.
Apparently, a female hiker injured her ankle while crossing the stream at Hanakapi‘ai Beach, two miles from the trailhead at Ke‘e Beach on the North Shore. The rescue crew airlifted her from Hanakapi‘ai Beach and transported her to awaiting medical personnel at Princeville Airport, said Koloa resident Luca Rostagno, Inter-Island Helicopters pilot.
At first light on Saturday, the emergency crew was dispatched to Kalalau Trail mile marker 8 near where a female hiker had injured herself in a fall, Rostagno said.
“Upon arriving at the scene Rescue 3 received notification from a female hiker of another injured female hiker further down the trail almost at the entrance of Kalalau Valley,” he said in an e-mail. “On the way to Waimea Clinic, with the first victim on board Air-1, Rescue 3 stopped by at the second victim location to assess the situation.
“A firefighter was left at the scene to attend the second victim while the rest of the crew completed the first rescue with the drop off at Waimea Clinic,” Rostagno said. “After refueling at Port Allen Airport, Air-1 went back to the Kalalau Valley to airlift the second victim to Princeville Airport.”
