For months Kaua‘i growers have been cleaning, staking and preparing their orchids, hoping to catch the judges’ eyes this weekend at the 16th Annual Mother’s Day Show and sale. This is one of the few American Orchid Society-judged events. The show is free. Arrangements can be made for shipping to the Mainland.

Kaua‘i Community Seed Library and Regenerations Botanical Garden present this workshop teaching how to save garden seed. Through a combination of talk-story, slide-show and hands-on seed activities participants will learn how to successfully grow, harvest, save and share their own garden seeds that get better every season. ‘Koke‘e, A Summer Retreat’ — the main gallery exhibit features photographs from the Kaua‘i Museum collection that celebrate this special place. This is history of a mountain retreat made popular by the Knudsen family in the late 1800s that opened up as leasehold lots beginning in the early 1920s to include a cross-section of the community including store owners, homesteaders, plantation management, churches and politicians. It tells the story of infancy of public-wilderness protection through government preserves and parks beginning in the territorial period to statehood in 1959.

Chefs from Contemporary Flavors, Kilauea Bakery and Pau Hana Pizza; Hanalima Bakery, Oceans at the Waipouli Beach Resort and Scotty’s Beachside Barbecue will compete in this year’s chili throw-down.
There is free entertainment with Na Hoku Hanohano award-winner Kupaoa, Aloha Breeze, Rumbletone, Kilauea School’s ‘Ukulele Band. Chili plates are $8.

Kaua‘i Chorale presents a Mother’s Day celebration. This unique formula is for the making of a laughable evening of entertainment. Leading the chorale of 75 voices is Lois Ricciardi with accompaniment by Virginia Shepherd. Added attractions are the Kahili Adventist School Singers, percussionist Dan Spriggs and Mayor Bernard Carvalho.

Hanapepe United Church of Christ
The Hanapepe United Church of Christ holds a bake sale featuring apple pies, carrot cakes, scones, brownies and a wide variety of cookies. There will also be a large assortment of gift ideas for Mother’s Day, including jams and jellies, aprons, pot holders and other hand-made crafts. Proceeds from the spring fundraiser will help with recent renovations to the church kitchen and to fund a series of community meals.
